Hypersthene is a mineral that's a common part of igneous and metamorphic rocks, and is also found in iron and stony meteorites: 

• Composition: Hypersthene is made up of magnesium and iron silicate, and its chemical formula is (Mg,Fe)SiO3. 

• Color: Hypersthene can be brown, green, or gray, and sometimes has a metallic sheen. 

• Luster: Hypersthene has a vitreous to pearly luster. 

• Hardness: Hypersthene has a Mohs scale hardness of 5.5–6. 

• Name: The word "hypersthene" comes from the Greek word for "over strength". 

Hypersthene is a mid-way mineral between enstatite and ferrosilite, as it contains a significant amount of both magnesium and iron. However, some references now prefer to categorize hypersthene as enstatite or ferrosilite.
