Malachite is formed as a secondary mineral through the weathering of copper ore deposits, essentially when water containing carbon dioxide comes into contact with existing copper sulfide minerals, causing oxidation and precipitation of the green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral malachite; its key properties include a vibrant green color, often with distinctive banding patterns, a relatively soft texture, and its chemical formula: Cu2CO3(OH)2; it is commonly found in botryoidal, fibrous, or stalactitic masses, and is often associated with the blue mineral azurite which can sometimes transform into malachite over time.
